Hanger 84/85

Main Contractor: RG Carter

Location: Cranfield

Contract Value: £300k

Completed: 2024

Hangars 84 and 85, both former Type C wartime hangars, play a crucial role in the operations of Cranfield Airport, an integral part of Cranfield University. The main contractors were appointed to refurbish and decarbonise these hangars to extend their serviceable life and support the university’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Today, they are used by the University for research and maintenance purposes.

To create the canopy roof, we used Coverworld CR34 0.9mm thick aluminium trapezoidal 34/1000 roof sheets. The wall cladding consists of Trespa FR 8mm thick panels in RAL 7016, face-fixed. The careful selection of materials allowed us to create a ‘box in a box’ type design which utilised the existing steel frame from World War II which the university and planning department where keen to achieve.
